The Common Whelk (Buccinum undatum) is a large species of sea snail. Common Whelk. This species is common throughout Britain. Sometimes called the Buckie, this species is easily identified by it's large size, as it can grow to around 10cm in length. This species is found on sand and mud down to about 100m deep. There is a significant fishery, which uses traps, for common whelks. The majority of the whelks are exported to the far east.
